Reflexology (Foot)
Foot Reflexology is one of the oldest modalities of massage therapy. The thought is that by applying thumb and finger pressure to certain areas of the feet, corresponding organs, systems and areas of the body are affected in a positive way.
It is also known as zone therapy and this technique works with the CNS (central nervous system), and helps to activate the parasympathetic nervous system (“rest and digest”) so when pressure is applied, it sends a relaxing message to the brain and allows for the body to respond.
Reflexology may also help to reduce stress, relieve pain and enhance the mood of the recipient.
Some research shows the health benefits of reflexology. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Several studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep. Studies also show that reflexology may have benefits in palliative care of people with cancer.”
